Just like Ankeveen, Kortenhoef is located in the municipality of Wijdemeren. Kortenhoef is well known for its ice skating trips across the Kortenhoefse Plassen and the Wijde Blick. In summer these lakes are only accessible by canoe or rowing boat in order to protect nature. The number of inhabitants of Kortenhoef is about 6,800.

There are several marinas in Kortenhoef, such as Jachthaven Kortenhoef, Ottenhome and some beaches. As a multifunctional centre, Sports Hall de Fuik offers various possibilities for sports, recreation and culture. The village has a rich history in art, as several painters of the The Hague School discovered the beauty of Kortenhoef at the end of the nineteenth century.

Since 2002, Kortenhoef, together with Loosdrecht, 's-Graveland and Ankeveen, is part of municipality of Wijdemeren.
